Will I be drafted?
For olim, IDF service depends almost entirely on your age when you arrive. Here's an indicative read on your obligation, the timeline, and the lone-soldier support waiting for you.
How the timeline runs
One year to settle. Olim get roughly a year to acclimatise before any draft.
Tzav Rishon. Your first IDF notice usually arrives about 9 months after you receive your teudat zehut.
Ulpan first. Some Hebrew is expected before service; the army provides more during training.
If you serve as a lone soldier
Higher pay than regular conscripts, plus a monthly living stipend.
Housing help — rent assistance, or a kibbutz / lone-soldier home for your base.
A flight home once during your service, and extra leave (special days off).
A support network — the Lone Soldier Center and Nefesh B'Nefesh's programme have your back.
Indicative only — the IDF (through Meitav and the draft office) decides each case individually on your "age of arrival", which can differ from your aliyah date if you spent significant time in Israel first. Reduced-service lengths, deferments for study, and exemptions all turn on personal circumstances. Doctors and dentists can be liable even when otherwise exempt. Verify your own position with the IDF or a specialist before planning around it.
