School Year Placement
Olim Advice · Family
Which grade will my child be in?
Israel places children by their Hebrew birthday, with a cut-off of 1 Tevet — so the secular cut-off date shifts every year and trips up every family. Enter a birthday and see the answer.
Why the date moves
The cut-off is 1 Tevet in the Hebrew calendar, not a fixed secular date. Because the Hebrew and Gregorian calendars drift against each other, the equivalent English cut-off lands on a different day each year — 1 January in 2025, 21 December in 2025, 11 December in 2026. A child who reaches the grade age by that date moves up; a few days the other way and they wait a year.
A guide to help you plan and register correctly. Placement is set by the Ministry of Education on your child's Hebrew birthday relative to 1 Tevet; schools handle exceptions, and olim children may receive extra Hebrew support (sha'ot olim). For a child born within a couple of weeks of the cut-off, confirm the exact placement with the school before registering.
